GENOMICS AFRICA FELLOW: DR MOLALEGNE BITEW

Dr Molalegne Bitew is an associate professor at Addis Ababa University and works as a senior researcher and director of health biotechnology research at at Bio and Emerging technology Institute (BETin).

Dr Molalegne Bitew came to this fellowship at KRISP at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and CERI at the University of Stellenbosch to receive training on SARS-CoV-2, HIV, TB and other pathogen sequencing to develop their skills and share that knowledge with their students and staff. These skills are vitally important for metagenomic analysis of multiple arboviruses (Dengue, Chikungunya, and Yellow Fever) samples that their students have collected.

Duration of the fellowship:  10 April 2023 to 21 April 2023.

Trained received: Hands-on sequencing on Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) and Illumina COVID-seq sequencing and bioinformatics analysis.
